Summary

This is an admirable idea and one which I hope the other manufacturers take on board. The shampoo’s formulation will help alleviate your dry scalp unless you react to one of the few contact allergens in there. It’s such a shame there are any contact allergens at all though.

buy now on Amazon Exorex is a company who, according to their website, provide a “management system for psoriasis”.   With that in mind, it may come as a surprise that this shampoo contains no active ingredients to help control scalp psoriasis.  Rather, the shampoo is said to be “carefully formulated to be kind on delicate skin that has been affected by psoriasis, both on the body and the scalp.”

The company recommends using medicated lotions or creams in conjunction with this shampoo. A shampoo free from all fragrances and colors and should, in theory, be kind to psoriasis sufferers.  The added bonus of this of course that if it’s good enough for psoriasis sufferers it’s good enough for ALL dandruff sufferers.  Anyone who uses a medicated dandruff shampoo will need to use a non-medicated shampoo occasionally and the milder the shampoo the better.  I was looking forward to seeing how this shampoo performed.

The shampoo itself is a thick white liquid that had no visible scent to speak of.  It foams very well and leaves the hair feeling moisturized and clean after washing.   Typically shampoos with ultra-gentle ingredients compromise on the quality of wash in some way. So I couldn’t help but wonder how they managed this where so many others have failed.

Surprisingly (although why I’m surprised any longer I don’t know) the manufacturers have created a shampoo with a luxurious foam by adding some pretty harsh chemicals.  Not lots of harsh chemicals, but enough for me to be surprised.  The shampoo isn’t sulfate free as they’ve added Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES).   They’ve added the ubiquitous Cocamidopropyl Betaine and worst of all, they’ve added an extremely harsh preservative called 2-Bromo-2-Nitropropane-1, 3-Diol (or Bronopol for short).  Bronopol releases formaldehyde which helps preserve the shampoo.  It also irritates a whole lot of us.

Quite how a company can state they have used ultra-gentle ingredients while adding chemicals this harsh is beyond me.

Don’t get me wrong, Exorex isn’t a bad shampoo.  Not at all.  It worked and it was quite gentle.  It’s just nowhere near as gentle as they claim and there are better alternatives out there.
