Summary

Philip B Peppermint & Avocado Volumizing & Clarifying Shampoo is an enigmatic experience. The combination of plant extracts is absolutely unique. We absolutely love the strong minty smell and the menthol effect on the scalp. However we don’t like the cheap predictable contact allergens in this shampoo. It’s also the most expensive shampoo we’ve purchased so unless you’re made of money…

buy now on Amazon “Hollywood Hairstylist” Philip B has long been supplying hair products. I’ve personally not used his products (too expensive!) but the clarifying shampoo arrived with some repute. The company describes the shampoo as containing “2.3% peppermint extract plus 16 pure plant extracts and 11 carrier and essential oils”. Online reviews were full of praise, particularly on how refreshing the peppermint oil felt on the scalp.  On arrival, I was very impressed by the packaging. It looks like a high-end bottle of wine or olive oil, which is just as well as this stuff cost an arm and a leg.

But does it justify the price?

Having never spent over $25 on a bottle of shampoo before I read the ingredients with interest. The shampoo contains about 45 ingredients which must be some sort of record for this site. The majority of the ingredients are extracts, some of which I’ve never seen before. I wonder what the avocado extract actually does?

In addition to the rather unique extracts, the shampoo also contains some pretty low grade contact allergens in the formulation. SLS, check. Cocamidopropyl Betaine – allergen of the year 2004, check. Harsh fragrances, check.

The ingredients are a bit of an enigma to be honest. The extracts have taken the work of real imagination. An absolute unique blend. However, you’d find the contact allergens in any 2 buck shampoo. Another ingredient worth noting at this point is menthol. More on that later…

The wash wasn’t as good as I was expecting. It certainly wasn’t bad – but this is a 25 buck shampoo we’re talking here. I expected something extra special. It doesn’t really foam well at all to be honest. I found myself using quite a large amount of shampoo. And my hair isn’t long. It smells nice though, a real fresh minty smell. And it makes the scalp tingle as other reviewers have suggested. However, most reviewers thought it was peppermint doing the tingling. Check the ingredients and you see it contains menthol… The whole effect works well though with the fresh minty smell and the fresh tingly scalp although I can see it being a bit much for some people. The smell and wash will divide opinion, it’s quite an extreme sensation for a shampoo.

All in all, if you’re going for a clarifying clean with a difference I can wholeheartedly recommend this shampoo. It’s unique in many respects. But is it worth the money? No, I’d say not. I’m quite sensitive to many chemicals in shampoos and this clarifier contains too many harsh chemicals for my liking. There are gentler clarifying shampoos out there.
