buy now on Amazon E45 has long been a brand associated with skin care, particularly for eczema sufferers, so it was surprising to see this shampoo branded as a dry scalp rather than a seborrhoeic dermatitis treatment. Particularly when it contains Climbazole, a mild anti fungal agent used to control mild cases of seborrheic dermatitis.

Confused branding aside, the company really has thought about the ingredients a lot. There’s only one known contact allergen in the shampoo which is almost unique these days. I’ve long lost hope that a manufacturer will develop a shampoo with NO contact allergens in there. Imagine that!

The allergen, in this case, is a preservative called Potassium Sorbate which 2% or so of the population are allergic to. The shampoo isn’t sulfate free which is disappointing. But other than these two mishaps the ingredients are excellent.

The shampoo itself is a pearlescent white liquid with no scent to speak of.  It foams pretty well, likely due to the sulfates in there, and it washed very well.  I suffer from pretty bad seborrhoeic dermatitis which Climbazole is far too mild to control, and I almost wish the company had added another active ingredient like Salicylic Acid to get rid of flakes, or Zinc Pyrithione to boost the anti-fungal properties. As it is, the shampoo didn’t control or remove my flakes at all but as I suffer no reaction to Potassium Sorbate it didn’t cause a bad reaction either.

If you suffer from the very mildest of Seborrhoeic Dermatitis or you frequently suffer from a dry scalp after washing then this shampoo could be an excellent choice.  For the rest of us, well we’ll still need something stronger.

  1. I live in the UK where E45 is readily available and I considered this shampoo to use on off days from mainstream seborrheic dermatitis shampoos containing cocamide dea. Unfortunately this shampoo contains isopropyl alcohol which is very drying which makes no sense because this shampoo is meant for those with dry scalp/skin. The search for a suitable SD shampoo continues…
