Summary

One of the best and mildest shampoos out there for seb derm sufferers with sensitive skin. SLS free, paraben free, colourant free with an absolutely outstanding choice of active and inactive ingredients. There are still two or three chemicals in there that some may find irritating. Otherwise this would have been a five.

buy now on ebay Vichy are a cosmetics company of some repute in the world of female skin care and not in the world of shampoos. Their Dercos range of hair care products is, according to the blurb, “the culmination of 30 years of research, experience and know-how in the physiology of the scalp and hair”. They sound like the perfect company! Can their shampoos live up to the hype?

vichy dercos anti dandruff sensitive shampoo

The first shampoo I reviewed was the Anti-Dandruff shampoo for sensitive skin. I reviewed this for a few reasons:

  1. I have a sensitive skin and dandruff
  2. The shampoo is labelled as sulfate free, paraben free and colorant free
  3. It contains a combination of Piroctone Olamine and Salycic Acid to control the dandruff while using Bisabolol to soothe the scalp.

Piroctone Olamine is a reasonably obscure anti-fungal ingredient which, in recent studies, has been shown to be more effective than the far more established Zinc Pyrithione when used in combination with Salicylic Acid. Salicylic Acid exfoliates the scalp and when used too much can dry your scalp. Use it sparingly.

The bottle arrived looking particularly pretty. It’s very green, but what an attractive package it all is. It smells nice too, a very mild smell of freshness rather than anything clinical. For a shampoo that contains no sulfates, the wash was fantastic and my hair felt really soft and clear afterward. My scalp was feeling itchy and I was just starting to accumulate dandruff again and this shampoo cleared it. It really worked. It felt too good to be true, so I checked the ingredients in more detail fully expecting the vilest combination of harsh chemicals. And do you know what, they simply didn’t exist.

I’m writing this review the day after the wash and my hair feels absolutely fantastic. My dandruff has cleared and my skin doesn’t feel too dry. Vichy has put together an absolutely superb set of ingredients with only two or three mildly dodgy choices. Even the fragrances, so often overlooked by manufacturers, have been chosen to be none irritating.

Vichy Dercos Anti-Dandruff Sensitive Shampoo is a shampoo of the highest quality and I recommend it to anyone who suffers from sensitive skin and seborrhoeic dermatitis. You will not be disappointed.

  1. Hi i just tried the Dead Sea Magik shampoo and had a really bad reaction to it, never had a reaction in my life. Prior to this was using a faith in nature and Kielhs Amino acid and had no burning after shampooing but the DSM I had burning ang tingling straight away, I have seb derm (oily and yeast looking ) Will this shampoo cause a reaction if you have SUPER sensitive scalp?

    Thanks

  2. Think it might be worth you reviewing the Vichy Dercos Sensitive Shampoo again as I suspect they have changed the formulation. Checking the ingredients on Amazon, it now seems to include SLS and has recently had some bad reviews from Amazon users.

    • It looks like they’ve withdrawn the product altogether! It’s off the vichy website. They’ve done this before and brought it back so I’ll keep my eyes on it. I can’t find any SLS formulation though.

  3. Hey Chris I came across your site yesterday and I find it very good for our information. Thank you for this review.
I just have one question about salicylic acid. In your review you write “Salicylic Acid exfoliates the scalp and when used too much can dry your scalp. Use it sparingly”.
What do you mean by that? Should we use a product that contains that substance (eg. Vichy Dercos Anti-Dandruff Sensitive) for a certain period of time only?
Or is it OK to use it as our main shampoo if we see that it deals with our dandruff problem?
    Thank you in advance

    • Hi Alex

I found this out first hand – overuse of salicylic acid dried my scalp and skin quite dramatically when I used it as my only shampoo over a period of months. I’m not alone either https://www.reddit.com/r/SkincareAddiction/comments/ham61e/salicylic_acid_drying_out_my_skin_skin_concerns/

I found alternating my shampoos to be the best course of action. One wash I’d use e.g. zinc pyrithione, another wash salicylic acid, my favourite is probably Piroctone Olamine as I could use that quite a bit, other times I’d use a non medicated shampoo entirely. Everybody is different and if you have oily skin it may not affect you the same. I just thought it was worth calling out.
