Eucerin Dermocapillaire Calming Urea Scalp Treatment isn’t a shampoo at all but a leave in scalp treatment for those of us who suffer from a dry scalp. The bottle is relatively small, typically coming in 100ml/3.3 fl oz. It’s also shaped like an eye/ear dropper with a tiny nozzle at the top to release drops of the liquid on the scalp.
The liquid is clear with a water like in consistency but feels quite oily to the touch. There is no perceptible smell and if you run it between your fingers the solution will foam very slightly.
You can use the solution on your a dry or damp scalp. I used it on my hair after washing and towel drying. It’s incredibly easy to apply, simply separate your hair in the affected areas and apply drops of the solution to your scalp. Massage it in slightly and just leave it in. It felt quite strange to leave a product on my scalp as I’m so used to washing afterwards. That said, if you have an itchy scalp like I did, the immediate sensation is one of absolute relief. The liquid is quite cold and it immediately eased the itch I was feeling. Aaaahhhhh. Once the solution starts to dry it really does help moisturize the scalp. It leaves a tiny barrier over the scalp, not uncomfortable by any means, quite the opposite in fact, and this barrier kept my scalp moisturized for a number of hours.
Performance wise, this is a unique product and provides a unique level of relief I’ve never felt before. I was keen to see what was actually in the solution before jumping to any wild conclusions though.
The main advertized ingredient in this solution is Urea. You’ll often see this called Allantoin in other ingredients due to certan negative connotations with Urea. Urea you see is uric acid derived from urine, typically from cows or other mammals. You’ll also find
urea in plants, especially comfrey and its widespread is cosmetics and skin care products. Urea is essentially a humectant designed to keep our skin moist. It’s found naturally in our skin and makes up to around 7% of our natural moisturising factor.. It’s an extremely hydrating chemical, bringing relief to dry skin.
However urea isn’t the only interesting ingredient in Eucerin’s Dermocapillaire Calming Urea Scalp Treatment. The treatment also contains:
- Methylpropanediol – helps ingredients to penetrate into the skin as well ashaving hydrating properties itself. It helps the skin feel smooth and moist.
- Sodium Lactate – Sodium Lactate is an effective humectant and moisturizer.
- Laureth-9 Polidocanol – a local anaesthetic which helps top explain the immediate relief you get from this treatment. It also relieves itching caused by eczema and dry skin.
- Glycrrhiza Root Extract – or liquorice root extract to you an I. Liquorice has been used for centuries to treat eczema.
- Lactic Acid – improves the skin’s texture through exfoliation. Encourages the skin to shed old, dead skin cells. Regular use will reduce fine lines and wrinkles in the skin because it stimulates collagen production. Lactic Acid is helpful in treating dry skin.
- Arginine HCL – a clinically proven skin conditioning agent.
- Cetrimonium Chloride – a preservative, an antiseptic agent and a skin conditioning agent
The solution also contains Water (obviously), Hydroxethylcellulose and PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil. Hydroxethylcellulose to both preserve the treatment as well as act as an emulsifier, binder and thickener. PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil helps to form emulsions – I wouldn’t use this on broken skin.
There is only one ingredient we monitor known to cause contact dermatitis and that’s Phenoxyethanol. Phenoxyethanol is a commonly used as a preservative or a fragrance in beauty products and its the one genuinely disappointing ingredient in this treatment. It is better than quite a lot of preservatives such as the formaldehyde releasers, but there are still better alternatives out there. That said, the vast majority of shampoos and scalp treatments out there contain far harsher ingredients.
Overall, this is an unique and well designed treatment, formulated with a deep knowledge of dry skin how to combat it gently. As well as providing instant relief, the treatment will moisturize your scalp for a number of hours. Eucerin ought to be commended for producing something so effective and gentle and if you suffer from a dry scalp, I can’t recommend this product highly enough.
