Summary

For a premium price, Pura D’or have created a premium product. Not only is it the most interesting and well designed formulation I have yet seen in a dandruff shampoo, it actually works. And it works well. With only two known irritants or allergens and one mild active ingredient, the shampoo uses essential oils to great effect.

Hopefully this is the first of many shampoos that takes advantage of the recent upsurge in herbalism to combat dandruff while reducing our dependence on harmful chemicals.

Pura D’or, as the website states, has been quietly

growing a culture planted on a natural set of values and beliefs. It comes down to one unified mission—to create organic personal care solutions that work naturally.

I already liked the cut of their jib before ordering their Argan Oil Based Scalp & Dandruff Shampoo.

Normally I would avoid Argan Oil shampoos as it’s high in oleic acid. Recent research is showing that its the sensitivity to Oleic Acid that causes seb derm in seb derm sufferer’s. So it may seem counter-intuitive to base a seb derm shampoo on an oil that causes seb derm. In reality, it depends on the amount of Argan Oil actually present in the shampoo. A little should have no impact at all. So rather than judging the shampoo before it arrived as I have a natural tendency to do, I decided to judge it after use.

And I’m very pleased I did…

The shampoo looks like a premium product. It’s priced like a premium product too but true to their word, Pura D’or has really cut down on most of the harsh chemicals you normally find in dandruff shampoos. They have added Cocamidopropyl Betaine as well as Phenoxyethanol so if you react to these chemicals I would steer clear of this shampoo. In addition, the shampoo is heavy in essential oils. I truly believe that we are about to see a revolution in skin science and plant extracts will drive this revolution. Essential Oils fall firmly in this category and Pura D’or has added:

In addition, the company has added both aloe vera and grapefruit seed extract which possess anti-fungal and anti-oxidant properties respectively.

As well as possessing a wide variety of benefits, essential oils contain fragrances. Unfortunately though, through lack of standardization and regulation,  it’s not clear what fragrances.  Or what quantities?  Each manufacturer is different.  So if you are sensitive to fragrances I would proceed with caution when using this shampoo. It really is a bit of a step into the unknown.  The fragrance isn’t even listed as an ingredient in the shampoo but the essential oils are rich in them.

That said, this is one of the most interesting dandruff shampoo formulations we have ever seen. The active ingredient is Zinc Pyrithione, an ingredient you’ll see in Head and Shoulders as well as thousands of other shampoos. Zinc Pyrithione doesn’t actually control my dandruff (it’s typically too weak compared to other antifungal agents) so I was genuinely interested if Pura D’or has managed to use plant extracts to benefit seb derm sufferers. Or is this just another well-marketed effort lacking in substance?

I was so curious in this particular that I decided to do a two-week trial.  The results were worth the wait. The wash you get from this shampoo is top class. It smells like tea tree oil combined with other essential oil scents – very pleasant indeed. The shampoo foams well considering it doesn’t contain any sulfates. And my hair felt incredibly soft afterward. Probably on account of Pura D’or adding the argan oil and avocado oil. This really is premium quality performance.

So did it work?

A resounding yes.

Over the two-week period, my dandruff was perfectly under control using Pura D’or’s dandruff shampoo. I also didn’t react at all to the shampoo. This isn’t to say that you won’t, particularly if you’re sensitive to perfumes. However, Pura D’or is the first Zinc Pyrithione shampoo that has controlled my dandruff and there is no doubt in my mind that it’s the essential oils that have helped. As I said, I believe plant extracts will revolutionize skincare and reduce our reliance on harsh cleaners and chemicals.  Pura D’Or really seems to be leading the way from a commercial manufacturer’s perspective.

This argan oil-based dandruff shampoo is the most interesting and well-designed formulation I have yet seen in a dandruff shampoo.

And it really works!

  1. Did you know there is a gold version of this shampoo that carrier 1% keto? I might give it a shot based on how good this line seems!

    • I did know they had a gold shampoo but never realized it had ketaconazole in it! I suppose it makes sense if it’s a hair loss shampoo – they all seem to add that ingredient these days.

Let me know how you get on!
